Google Nexus One Gets Android 2.2 Update

Android 2.2, codenamed “Froyo” (frozen yogurt) is already being reported as released for the Nexus One

In just a lttle less than a week after its Android 2.2 release, Google has rolled out the new operating system to Nexus One phones around the world.

Google had announced at its 2010 I/O conference, that the update should be expected in June. And the speculation for the update being available first for the Nexus One seems to be confirmed.

Code named Froyo, Android 2.2 is historically significant because it is the first operating system to bring mobile support for Adobe Flash. This is a great new feature, considering all of the well known rows between Apple and Adobe over the lack of Flash support on Apple products.

Froyo will address some of Apple’s concerns in the form of the Dalvik JIT compiler. Google has cited a 2 to 5 times speed /performance boost for all Android 2.2 devices as well. But knowing that Android has always been a very fast operating system, many users will not be able to detect the increased speed, but they are comfortable knowing that it is there.

Among other new features, Android 2.2 will bring support for USB tethering to smartphones. This means that 3G and 4G data connections hosted on Android powered smartphones can now be shared with laptops that do not have build in mobile data connectivity. Reports Google.

Another highly anticipated feature is support for tethering and the ability for Android to be used as a WiFi hot-spot. Other great features now available on Android 2.2  include automatic updates for market apps and improved exchange support, particularly for the calendar.
