Dell At Best Buy Good Or Bad Deal

We all go there, to Best Buy that is, and over the years we all bought many good things at that store. We sometimes didn’t agree with the return policies they have, but still it wasn’t something way too unbearable. So we kept coming back.

Now Dell computers have always been a dream. We love them, and who wouldn’t. They seem to look like a dream, work like a dream, all is a dream but the support. Yes Dell support has not been perfect for many years, but now it’s even worst. And especially if your Dell computer has been purchased from a Best Buy store you’re just in for it.

Back in the August we got a Dell laptop for my Hubby for his work. It seemed like the perfect thing it’s beautiful, light, portable and it could go with him anywhere. One of other things that was awesome was that the Dell laptop was as a present for our anniversary.

The excited couple (Hubby and I) arrived home from our local Best Buy store with the anticipation and couldn’t wait to open his new laptop. The first impression was WOW. But hold on it didn’t last for long. Now 5 minutes into being on the whole system crashed. And we seriously couldn’t believe it.

The next day we went to the Best Buy and told them that the computer they sold us was defected. The Geek Squad (children as they are) had some fun making jokes how we’re computer illiterate. And to them all I can say is: Even if that was the case, and even if a Mule was at the computer it couldn’t have caused it to crash just by turning it on.

Anyways, the Best Buy was kind of rude and we didn’t expect them to be any other way, but after 4 hours there we have finally agreed to an exchange. The new laptop was also from Dell. Same thing just a little bigger monitor, and deferments in a number.

We came home to a surprise. This computer had so many things in the box like headphones, more Cd’s, an extra book, cleaning supplies. Which meant the first one had nothing.

The new Dell laptop certainly looked better, worked what was the most important, has bigger monitor but it didn’t take long to notice a band speaker part near the monitor. The Best Buys answer to that was “Oh they come like that” Hmmm…

In that first week Hubby didn’t say much, but he wasn’t so impressed about his new Dell. Than one evening he finally asked (because he got me an anniversary present HP laptop that I love and HP is the best) “Is your laptop way overheating?” To tell you the truth I thought he was joking. My laptop is on all day and most of the night, I’m on it so much doing that time, and it never even gets a little hot not to even think of the possibility of overheating. So I said “No, why?” And he showed me.

The laptop was cold and not used for 4 hours, he turned it on and 5 minutes later the dashboard, the mouse pad the keyboard was burning hot, to the point that you can’t keep your hand’s on it. And his monitor would flicker and blink and that thing looked and acted so so defective.

On the box it said One Year Warranty From Dell Manufacturers For Parts And Services. We went to the Dell online and the support just ignored us. Hmmm… they said our warranty has expired. Now how was that possible. We called Best Buy and they told us that we should call Dell. After calling Dell and waiting forever, we finally went trough the automated system that placed us on hold again, for good ten or more minutes. And when finally the phone was answered from Dell Support In India, we said our problem and the guy just hang up on us. Yes that was so nice of him. The next time we called, we got hi and Call Best Buy. Than we had our third conversation with the manager who all but started cursing at us because the Dell has a new policy that if you buy a Dell computer from Best Buy they won’t help you.

Without any choice we called Best Buy and explained to the manager what was going on. They told us to bring the laptop to the Geek Squad (remember those kids who make fun of everyone). In the Best Buy at the Geek Squad counter they asked for a credit card before they asked to know what was happening with the computer. We told them that we have a warranty and that we don’t see why would they need a credit card. So they informed us that some part of the cost is covered bu the warranty, but not all. So they’ll need 180 dollars from us and warranty and we should live the laptop with them for 5 to 7 days.

That didn’t work really. First we can’t live the laptop for that long because Hubby needs it for work every day and second if we have the warranty why should we give them almost 200 bucks.

The phone calls continued on and on and Dell rudely has just two ways of answering 1) we have a deal with Best Buy not Geek Squad we can’t help you! And 2) they hang up!!!

I’m so disappointed at Dell and Best Buy and all of it. But what I don’t get is why is it in Dell’s interest to have such a rude and unprofessional support?

I’ll tell you one thing after almost 4 months of agony with them we’re at the square one still. We did some research on the Internet and it appears we’re not alone. There is so many people who got burned by the same deal buying Dell at the Best Buy. We won’t go back there for sure and Dell is out of the question in this house no matter where it comes from Dell directly or any other store. And why? Well other than having a much worst performance, it’s not really so magical as advertising led us to believe, it also has the worst support on the earth!!!

So there you have it the longest post ever, well take it more like the longest angry post ever. I can’t express my disappointment in those two companies.

Oh I hate you have had such bad luck. We are on our second Dell. First a desktop and we got a laptop from them about 6 months ago and so far have had no problem. We almost went to Best Buy to get our laptop, but ordered from Dell directly. Sounds like we made the right choice.

Heather you definitely made the right choice by ordering directly from Dell! And as far as desktops go, my parents and sister have them for the last six years and they’ve never had any problems.

What I think it is, is that Dell is sending bad computers to Best Buy and than refuses to offer any support, and Best Buy being a store has sales before anything in mind, so instead of helping and fixing the problem they are just trying to sell you more stuff, in this case by paying Geek Squad for the services that should have been covered by the warranty for 1 full year!

Oh, you poor thing! I’m on my (newest) Dell Laptop which came directly from Dell about 6 months ago, and haven’t had any issues (knock wood!) aside from having to restore it once (and I think that was a ‘bad’ software issue, not a hardware/computer one). My hubby’s 2-cents (‘cuz I had to read this post to him…*snicker!*) is that it sounds like at the very least you got either a refurbished one (bad news!) or that Dell sold you a ‘used’ one (you know, like maybe a demo model or one that had been previously returned…like the one you returned that probably got boxed right back up and sold to some other poor soul.)

I’m hearing more and more better things about HP compared to how they used to be years ago – they’ve apparently learned from their mistakes and are making much better computers. I’ll definitely check out HP when I need to upgrade again – and definitely won’t be buying ANY computers from Best Buy!

I’m glad your Dell is working good :) definitely when bought from Dell they do the job! And about the restoring it I so hear you on that, most times it’s due to windows itself especially now with Vista systems are a little shaky still.
Your Hubby is definitely right, they do that all the time, people return something they say the Geek Squad will fix it, but what I think is they just box it back and sell it as good and new!
    I don’t know it’s all so bad and ugh…

Now about HP, I always liked them, but didn’t have them till now (well I had printer, scanner from them but no computer) and I really can’t complain. It never acts up and it’s awesome.
I have the HP Pavilion Entertainment PC (I have a remote too) LOL I’m such a child hahhahaahhah!

  6. They wouldn’t even let you return the computer? Honey, go up, up, up the chain until you get to someone who will help you (even if you have to go to corporate).

I agree with HP. I have had one for a year and a half, with no problems to date. I love mine, and can not figure out how I had a desk top for 10 years! I will never have another desk top again.

Go sip on some hot chocolate and have a smile at the little Geek Squad fellas who have to treat people like they are illiterate so they can feel better about themselves. Those type of people never get very far in life.

Well we did return the first one, actually it was an even exchange and since we had it less than 24 hours we didn’t have to pay the 25% from the price for the restocking fee ugh… with the second one we tried to fix the problem first and while going back and fort from Dell to Best Buy, in the end we really don’t want to give them 25% from the cost and get the rest as a store credit.
    They really are awful sometimes!
As is right now we are waiting for the phone call from Dell to see what will happened in the end any day now (let’s hope we’ll get some results). And trust me we call them all the time :)
