Chicago Style Italian Beef Sandwich

One thing about Chicago that is always good is Italian Beef, well next to Deep Dish Pizza, right?!.

And this recipe comes so close to the original one they do in restaurants.

Chicago Style Italian Beef Sandwich

Ingredients:

  • 4 pounds top round with fat cap
  • 3 tablespoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoons salt
  • 1 tablespoons fresh cracked black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon red chili flakes
  • 3 tablespoons bacon fat, or canola oil
  • 3 yellow onions, chopped
  • 1 cup garlic, whole cloves
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 6 sourdough baguette rolls halved, toasted
  • 1 cup chopped giardiniera vinaigrette vegetables (optional)
  • 1 cup jarred red sweet peppers (optional)
  • Mozzarella cheese, or American white (or yellow) cheese melted (optional)

Directions:

Rub meat with dry ingredients, cover and refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours.

Preheat oven to 275F.

Add meat to a roasting pan with bacon fat, add onions and garlic, saute for 15 minutes, deglaze with wine, and add Worcestershire sauce, beef stock and bay leaves.

Place roasting pan in the oven and cook for 3 hours, uncovered, or until an instant-read thermometer registers 135F in center. Remove, let cool, then slice very thin.

Cool broth in roasting pan and remove the fat that rises to the top. Strain.

Reheat the broth, and add the sliced meat. Place some meat on each toasted roll, ladle with some broth and top with giardiniera vegetables and red peppers.

Or if you are like me add some cheese to it. I love to open the toasted roll, melt mozzarella or American white cheese (yellow is good too) and add meat and broth to it.

It doesn’t get any yummier than that!

ENJOY!!!

I’ll have to try this. I’m a native Chicagoan and love Italian beef. I tried a recipe that I blogged about awhile back, but it did not have the seasonings right to really taste like Italian beef. It’s all about the seasoning.

OH, I know. If the seasoning is not right the taste will definitely be off. The original recipe does use a bit more salt and pepper than I do. But it seemed just a bit too salty for me so I cut it in half.
Let me know how you like it if you try it :)

This is one of my hubby’s faves, but since we left Chicago he has had to “suffer” through the sandwiches downstate. I will have to try this. I have never made mine by slicing. I wonder if he would like that better than shredding? Thanks for posting!
